Barrio El Carmen

A curated experience in and around Valencia

Barrio El Carmen

El Carmen is on of the six neighborhoods of the Ciudad Vella district, which is the historical center of Valencia. It is an ancient neighborhood which grew between two walls: the Muslim one (11th century), limited it on the east and the new Christian wall (14th century) protected it from the west.

The Barrio El Carmen received its name fromt eh church and convent of Carmen Calzado. The Plaza del Carmen was the first to be called this way. Over the years the entire neighborhood adopted this name.

The first urban center was in the northern area of the current neighborhood, coinciding with the Muslim suburb outside the walls, close to the Muslim wall.

After the Muslim era, the easternmost part was destined for the city's Moorish quarters, while the part around the river remained a suburb for agricultural use.

Barrio El Carmen

The neigborhood started to develop and became inhabited in the Muslim period begins around 714.
When the Caliphate of Córdoba fell and Valencia became the capital of the Kingdom of Taifas, a large number of immigrants arrived in the city, causing great urban growth.

After the occupation of Jaime I, the houses outside the walls were given to the soldiers, which caused many Muslims to leave the city.

In 1281 the Carmelites decided to occupy undeveloped land to build and install their Convent of Carmen, which will cause the neighbourhood to end up being called El Carmen.

Currently El Carmen is the artistic, bohemian, party district of Valencia, famous from its graffity and wall-art, free spirit, filled up with museums and schools, bars and vivid night life.
